what time is it?

what time is it?

what time is it? what time is it? what time is it?

John Tilbury won a piano scholarship to the Royal College of Music where he studied with Arthur Alexander.
He subsequently became a pupil of James Gibb and then went to Warsaw on a Polish government scholarship where he studied with Zbigniew Drzewiecki and co-founded the Warsaw Music Workshop group with Zygmunt Krauze.

In 1968 he was a prize-winner in the Gaudeamus International Competition in Contemporary Music in Holland and since then has specialized as a performer
of twentieth century music.
Tilbury has given first performances and broadcasts of new music in many contemporary music festivals including the Warsaw Autumn, the Venice Biennale, Glaspow Musica Nova, the Europelia Festival in Brussels, the Zagreb Biennale and Cheltenham. He has also performed in the Far East and has toured the U.S. on several occasions. He has worked with many composers including the late Cornelius Cardew, David Bedford, John Cage, Morton Feldman, Christian Wolff, Terry Riley, Tom Phillips, and his recording of Cage's Sonatas and Interludes for prepared piano has been acclaimed by the critics. Tilbury is well known as animprovising musician through
his membership of the AMM, one of the most distinguished free improvisation groups to have emerged in the sixties.
He currently teaches piano at London University's Goldsmiths'College and is writing a book on the music of Cornelius Cardew. John Tilbury's repertoire over the years has included many works by the European, American and Japanese
avant garde: Luigi Nono, John Cage, Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman, Yuji Takahashi. His new English programmes feature i n particular the music of Cornelius Cardew, John White, Howard Skempton and Dave Smith, and include works by other leading English composers. He has also devised programmes in which sixteenth and seventeenth century works for harpsichord are juxtapcsed with contemporary keyboard music.
